“No Medal Can Justify Abuse” — European Athletics Reaffirms Commitment to Respect and Safeguarding

In the wake of a high-profile UK Athletics disciplinary case, European Athletics President Dobromir Karamarinovhas reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to safeguarding across sport, stating clearly:

“No medal or result can ever justify behaviour that undermines the dignity and welfare of athletes.”

Through its Race for Respect programme, European Athletics is taking a proactive stance to embed safeguarding in every layer of the sport, from clubs and federations to European-level competition. The initiative focuses on education, awareness, and clear reporting pathways, ensuring that every athlete, coach, and support staff member knows where to turn if something doesn’t feel right.

President Karamarinov praised the courage of athletes who have spoken out, including Laura Muir, whose decision to come forward was described as an act of leadership that will help others find their voice.

The message is clear: safeguarding is not a policy,  it’s a culture. Integrity, respect, and welfare must remain at the heart of every sporting environment.
